Hit in a Carpark: the 5-Step NSW Checklist

Photograph everything, get their details or note the time and bay, and don’t admit fault on the spot. Then call a repairer you trust before you call anyone’s claims line. For the full claims process and your rights, see Insurance & Claims →

The Five Steps, in Order

  1. 1. Photograph everything. Both cars, the damage, the position, the bay number. Do this before anything moves.
  2. 2. Get their details, or the evidence to identify them. Name, rego, phone, insurer if they’ll give it. If they’ve left, note the bay, time, and any CCTV coverage nearby.
  3. 3. Don’t admit fault. Not-at-fault status is your insurer’s call to make from the evidence, not something to settle verbally in a carpark.
  4. 4. Call a repairer before the claims line. A number in hand changes the whole conversation with an assessor later.
  5. 5. Lodge the claim. Nominate your repairer by name in that first call.

Where This Plays Out Locally

This exact scenario is a regular call from Crows Nest and St Leonards carparks, tight, high-turnover parking near the station precincts on both.
